A thermowell is a hollow tube that is installed into a process vessel and allows a temperature sensor to be inserted into the flow stream. The thermowell can be made of materials such as stainless steel, copper or plastic.
A thermowell may be used to measure the temperature of fluids or gases in heat exchangers, reactors and other process equipment.
The main purpose of the thermowell is to provide a means for inserting a temperature probe into the fluid flow. In most cases, this will be an electrical resistance temperature detector (RTD). The RTD will then measure the temperature of the fluid and convert it into an electrical signal which can then be read by a controller or recorder.
